Hussite millenarians believed Louny was one of the towns that would escape the world’s final destruction. Its coat of arms includes a crescent moon, and folk etymology connects the town’s name with it. The earliest form is recorded in 1115 as villa Lun. The etymology remains unresolved; possible origins include the Old Czech lúň, “kite”, or the Celtic luna, “meadow”. (See Žatec and Slaný.)
