The memorial book of Rychnov, now part of Jablonec nad Nisou, records an event following the failed harvest of 1804, when hunger gripped the region: ‘When need was greatest, remarkable help came to the poor of this area for at least a few days. On the morning of 16 July 1805 a violent storm arose, bringing heavy rain mixed with hail towards noon. In Pelikovice, near Železný Brod and near Liberec, instead of hail fell grains the size of peas and lentils, in such quantities that people filled whole baskets. They varied in size and shape; some were more or less elongated like rye grains, only a little thicker. Some people cooked them in milk and called it a rain of manna.’
