Ivančice · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The case of the Ivančice vampire

In 1617 the inhabitants of Ivančice, formerly Evančice, were stirred by a case of vampirism. It was alleged that a dead local burgher rose from his grave at night and killed many people. An executioner was called to dig up the body and cut it to pieces. During this procedure blood supposedly spurted from the dead man's mouth. A veil was pulled from it which he was said to have taken from his dead wife, lying beside him in the grave, and chewed.
