Chlum sv. Máří was once notorious as a haunt of evil spirits and witches from the Cheb region and the Palatinate. The forest's lord and guardian here was Heyman, called Hehman in the Český les: a giant figure with a broad hat and moss and lichen for hair and beard. He was the Cheb counterpart of Rübezahl.
