The Moravian alchemist Jiří Hoznauer of Prunhof and Hrubčice took his name from Hrubčice. He conducted experiments at the court of Duke Frederick of Württemberg, a great patron of alchemy in Germany. He managed to deprive the duke of two tonnes of gold, and when the fraud was exposed, he tried to flee. He had his hair cut and beard shaved, but the duke's men caught him nevertheless and he was sentenced to death. He was hanged in a gilded robe from an iron gallows covered in gold leaf.
