Hranice · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The cursed steward

An evil steward buried in the church of Hranice haunted it. The organ played by itself and bells rang. At midnight the steward leapt from the crypt with blazing eyes, took off his skin and began playing cards with three devils. Afterwards he rose and ran along the cornices, cackling. Only when a cock crowed towards morning did he put his skin on again and lie down in his tomb. At the priest's insistence his body was finally removed from the crypt and buried at Smolná. From then on the church was peaceful.
