Horšovsky Týn · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

Pilgrimages to the black St Anne

West of the town, on a gentle rise surrounded by parkland, stands the pilgrimage church of St Anne, visible from afar. Several Stations of the Cross lead up to it. A statue of St Anne in black-lacquered wood used to be kept in a glass case on its high altar. According to legend, a local man named Křenka ploughed it up here in the late 15th century. He took it home and locked it in a cupboard, but the next day he ploughed it up in the same place again. When the inexplicable event occurred a third time, he and the townspeople of Horšovský Týn built a wooden chapel on the spot. A late-Gothic stone church was later erected there, attracting numerous pilgrimages from the surrounding area. The Gothic statue of St Anne is now in the town's church of St Apollinaris.
