According to legend, the castle took its name from the court jester Bečko, for whom his lord, the magnate Ctibor, built the residence. Once it was finished, however, the lord liked the castle so much that he bought it from Bečko for “as much gold as he could carry on his back”, adding another of his castles as well. The jester had only one condition: that the castle should bear his name for ever.

Beckov: the jester who exchanged a castle for gold and an immortal name
The lord paid in gold. The jester kept something more valuable: his own name on the castle. The Beckov legend tells of a bargain meant to outlast generations.
