Český Krumlov · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The Emperor’s Mad Son

In 1601, Petr Vok of Rožmberk sold Krumlov to Emperor Rudolf II. The emperor had his son Don Julius, born to Strada the antiquarian’s daughter, confined here. The deranged young man killed his mistress, a bathhouse keeper’s daughter. He cut up her body according to a strict ritual and scattered its pieces around the room. He then held a solemn funeral ceremony, with servants and clergy in mourning clothes carrying torches accompanying him to the tomb. Legend says that a demon strangled him. After his death his body was blackened and blood flowed from his nose. He is buried with his victim Markétka Pichlerová in the former cemetery by the monastery church of Corpus Christi and the Annunciation.
