As at other Rožmberk residences, the family’s White Lady appeared here, an archetype of the others. She even entered Erasmus’s Des Prodiges, On Wonders. The author quotes the memoirs of the imperial chancellor Vilém Slavata, who relates that the White Lady appeared not only before a member of the Rožmberk family died, but also before a birth or wedding. In the first case she wore black gloves as a sign of death; in the second, white gloves signifying joy. Besides the château, she supposedly appeared in the former Jesuit college, now the Hotel Růže, on Horní Street. The college rector Vojtěch Chanovský of Dlouhá Ves described one such apparition in a letter of 16 June 1618 to the abbess of St George’s in Prague.
