Alois Ulrich, the estate's chief steward, oppressed his subjects and treated them very unjustly. After his death on 22 February 1817 his ghost began appearing at night. He rode an 'armoured' horse with a white calf-like head and unnaturally large hooves. Every day the headless rider could be seen along the beautiful linden avenue from Žďár Château to today's Bouchalky. He also appeared in a covered carriage drawn by fiery horses and lay in wait for people. Nothing grew where he stepped. Several encounters with people are recounted. Finally an executioner from Jihlava was summoned, opened the grave and cut off the corpse's head with a spade. Thereafter the ghost ceased appearing and troubling the town.
