A revenant is not one specific being but a whole group of apparitions of the dead. The book includes White Ladies, ghosts of nobles, monks and knights, vampires and other restless dead. They are often bound to a place with a powerful story — a castle, house, cross or cemetery.

What the old legends say
Folk tradition used prayers, holy water, the cross and proper funeral rites against the restless dead. Legends also describe much more drastic interference with graves and bodies, but these belong to the history of folklore and are neither safe nor lawful practices.
