The book presents the Golem as the result of the Kabbalistic desire to create artificial life. The clay figure was supposedly animated by the secret name of God—the shem—and obeyed its creator's commands. The best-known legend links it to Prague's Rabbi Löw; in one version the Golem escaped control and became a danger to those around it.

What the old legends say

According to legend the Golem could be safely stopped above all by its creator, by removing the shem or cancelling the command that animated it. For a person who does not control the Golem, no folk protective remedy is reliably documented; it is best to step out of its path and not try to give it orders.
