The local Jewish community was among the largest in the country during the Middle Ages, and many distinguished people were born here. Rabbi Löw ben Bezalel, creator of Prague’s Golem, worked here among others. Rabbi Šmelke Lévi Horovitz, one of Mikulov’s most important Jews, also lived here. He belonged to the Hasidic movement, studied Kabbalah and remains the subject of many legends. He died in 1778.
