An ancient prophecy says that St Wenceslas’s army sleeps inside the hill supporting Mělník, as at Blaník. It will come to the country’s aid at its darkest hour. A treasure is also said to lie inside in old oak barrels, guarded by a black dog with fiery eyes. It can be reached only at Easter while the Passion is read. Legend says priests once entered the hill at that time, carrying lighted candles. They saw the treasure, but as they approached within arm’s reach, a wind rose and extinguished their candles. They returned empty-handed and never dared to enter the underground chambers again.
