The hill of Kaňk (353 m), which contains Kutná Hora’s silver mines, had many pits and sinkholes believed to be inhabited by devils. Later water flooded many mine passages and shafts and drove even the devils out of the holes. They were said to fly regularly around the town after midnight. The settlement of Čertovka remains here as a reminder of those times. The best-known mine was Osel, the Donkey, which was later flooded too. A local saying ran: “As long as the Donkey brays, Kutná Hora will stand.”
