In a letter dated 5 February 1608, Emperor Rudolf II ordered the councillors of Kutná Hora to send the chief governor “some moss that grows at execution sites on the bones of people departed from this world for their evil deeds, particularly the moss that grows on human skulls”. He also ordered that this be “procured in secret”.
