In the days of great fires, a strangely expressive hunchbacked little man appeared in town calling himself the Wandering Jew. Once he went from house to house asking everyone to turn their tables and chairs upside down. People naturally laughed and drove him away. Only one house in Antonínova Street granted his peculiar wish. Joyfully he placed a piece of bread between the table legs and said, ‘Thank God, you have redeemed me. As a reward your house will not burn.’ Soon afterwards a fire destroyed every house except that one. Another tradition says a tall man with shining eyes running through the streets foretold fires in the town.
