Jindřichův Hradec · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The Wild Hunt at Vaibertruc

Beyond the Nežárka, on the way to Rudolfov, a summerhouse called Vaibertruc, from the German for women's defiance, stands in a park. Married and unmarried women supposedly once enjoyed themselves freely here, with a dance hall and various games. The ghostly Wild Hunt appears nearby. Its wild huntsmen celebrate at the summer solstice, on the eve of St John the Baptist, gathering at the former execution ground near St James's and sharing their prey. After a wild entertainment at Vaibertruc, the Wild Huntsman supposedly appeared and threw a piece of a hanged man onto the feast table. He then danced with a wayward woman until he finally left her unconscious in the garden.
