Deep cellars beneath the little château in Jaroměřice lead into underground passages running in several directions. One reaches the cellar of an inn on the road to Jevíčko. All are now walled up. They were haunted by a headless man in a velvet doublet, tight breeches and riding boots with spurs, carrying his severed head under his arm. He was the evil bailiff, or local nobleman, Bešterenec. At night he rode a black horse out of the courtyard, holding the reins in one hand and his head in the other, racing over the fields.
