At dusk and at night a dead man's ghost called Braying Martin appeared here. In life he was said to have been grasping and to have moved boundary stones; this is a widespread variation on the fiery-man legend. His spirit wandered around braying and crying, ‘Where shall I put it?’ If anyone mocked him, he climbed onto their back and had to be carried home. Eventually he was supposedly freed by the correct answer to his eternal question and never appeared again.
