Horní Police · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The Spirit in the Wall

In the seventeenth century, the village became an important pilgrimage centre with the Church of the Visitation. In the nearby cemetery is the so-called Jaken Wall, where the spirit of a wicked castle lady supposedly shrieks at night. She is Polyxena, wife of the lord of Šachov, said to have cruelly tormented her servants. After her death, exorcisms failed. Her spirit supposedly lives in the wall, and smoke sometimes rises from its cracks. See Starý Šachov.
