Holice · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The Wild Women

Wild women lived in the surrounding woods. Remains of old masonry were shown as their supposed bakery. Each woman’s life was linked with an enormous oak nearby. When the tree fell, she died too. Before one of these giants was felled, dreadful lamenting and groaning supposedly came from the forest. They sometimes dealt with people and served them well. As the old oak forest was cut down, the wild women dwindled. The last was supposedly caught in the Opočno deer park in the 1840s.
