The Philosopher’s Residence

At the château one can see Braun’s statues of Minerva, Mars and two depictions of Hercules. The building is surrounded by a Baroque park with two sphinxes. In 1785 Count Josef Karel of Wallenstein brought the famous adventurer and Freemason Giacomo Casanova de Seingalt (1725–1798) here. He worked as librarian from then on. Here he wrote the utopian novel Icosameron, History of My Escape from the Leads in Venice, and his Memoirs. He died here on 4 June 1798 and is buried in the château park. A memorial plaque is set by St Barbara’s Chapel. A memorial exhibition was installed in the château rooms traditionally associated with him.
