Plivník appears, for example, as a bedraggled black chick, a red rooster or a fiery tail. He may bring property and good fortune, but legends link his help to eventual ruin or damnation. The related šotek can serve a household, yet may ultimately claim his master’s soul too.

What the old legends say
The safest course was not to accept a plivník into one’s service at all, nor to take money or other benefits from him. The legends warn that his apparent assistance ends with a high price. In Christian settings, prayer, the cross and blessed objects appear as protections.
